A concertina pop-up book, originally written by Hans Christian Andersen in the late 1800s. I wanted to bring the story to life and tell it in a more contemporary way – with a unique novelty book/pop-up sort of feel. The Little Match Girl has been designed around the illustrations - the various scenes and concertina format allow the book to be seen as a whole, it is an artform in itself and the intricate illustrations are something you can sit and look at for hours. The story is written at the bottom of each scene, these can be folded down to access and read the story.
My inspiration for this book came from Droplets – a handmade concertina book which I designed a few years ago during my final year at university.
